“Star Wars: Return of the Jedi gave us a look into the palace of Jabba the Hutt™ and the Gamorrean Guards in his employ. Classic, behind-the-scenes documentaries at the time were a big part of how fans like me relived the film and explored the darkened corners of that palace and the creatures who resided there. Learning about the ILM creature shop during the production of that 1983 film was a big part of what led me to a life in the world of FX and movie monsters.
We worked with Dave Carson on our Nien Nunb™ Concept Maquette Replica and we’re thrilled to have him back signing plaques for this very limited edition Gamorrean!
I can’t wait to see this new maquette replica in the collections of discerning prop and statue fans and Star Wars collectors!”!”
– Tom Spina (Regal Robot founder)
During the production of films, the creature effects team will often dream up new and fantastic aliens and beasts by creating small scaled sculptures, called “maquettes,” to showcase their ideas. From this menagerie of maquettes, the film’s director and producer choose which characters will be brought to life for the film as costumes or puppets and what roles they will play in the story.
Sculpted by the creature shop’s Dave Carson, this incredible beast of a design was an early version of what was to become the Gamorrean Guards in Jabba’s Palace. Dave would go on to sculpt the large masks for full scale Gamorrean costumes along with many other creatures for the movie!
